A torc, also spelled torq or torque, is a large rigid ring of metal crafted either in a single piece or from several strands of metal that are twisted together. In Celtic cultures, torcs were an ordinary piece of jewellery in Celtic society. Celts wore torcs to demonstrate that they were free-born. They were worn around the neck & wrists of men, women, and their children. Torcs were made from gold, silver, bronze, copper, and Iron. Torcs were not just beautiful works of Celtic art & skills. They identified the wearer’s status, proving that they were someone of importance. This piece of jewellery protected the neck during a sword fight; Torcs were valuable heirlooms and passed down with pride. Torcs were also thought to represent Celtic gods and ward off evil spirits. Celtic Gods & warriors found in ancient artwork show them to be wearing a torc around their necks. Some surviving torcs have been found in shallow pits, rivers, and lakes. They were most likely put there for a ritual purpose or as some offering to please the gods.
