Celtic Copper Craft

Welcome to Celtic Copper Craft. I’m Tom, the artist and owner behind the craft. I’m originally from Dublin, the capital of Ireland. I’ve been living in Australia for many years. I am self-taught in the craft of copper repousse..

I specialise in crafting beautiful copper artwork. My fine art copper sculptures are known & admired the world over

My copper artwork embodies a traditional, rustic, and organic style. Embracing imperfections, much like those found in nature, I find that the beauty of wear and tear adds a unique charm and depth that surpasses the idealised perfection of manufactured products …I also enjoy upcycling old picture frames for my copper artwork whenever possible.

At the heart of Celtic Copper Craft lies a genuine commitment to delivering exceptional, professional service to each of my clients. Copper repousse is a handcrafted art form that has almost faded into obscurity in our era of mass production. I am dedicated to preserving this traditional Celtic copper art and ensuring it remains alive.

What is copper repousse

When you engage in the art of repoussé copper, you are participating in a tradition that has existed for thousands of years. Repoussé involves transferring a design onto a copper sheet and then shaping the design from the back using basic tools.
Once the tooling is complete, the copper artwork is filled with beeswax sourced from local beekeepers to help it maintain its shape. The next step is to apply a patina, using chemical processes to create a specific tonal appearance on the copper. Common materials for patina include salt, liver of sulphur, and vinegar.
Finally, the copper piece is polished to enhance the highlights of the design, then lacquered, framed, and prepared for shipping. These beautiful copper artworks should not be confused with cheap, machine-made, mass-produced products.
